Harvey West earned his doctorate in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at N.C. State and is a registered professional engineer in North Carolina. He started as an Extension Specialist with the Furniture Manufacturing and Management Center in 1997 and established the Furniture Testing and Evaluation Laboratory. With a background in materials science and engineering, he has now become very involved in the characterization and testing of metal and polymer parts fabricated by additive manufacturing.
West manages two labs equipped for chemical analysis, static and fatigue testing, metallography, and particle size analysis. He has conducted more than 1,000 tests for over 200 different companies at the Product Testing and Evaluation Laboratory. Working with Dr. Denis Cormier and Dr. James Taylor, he secured U.S. Patent “Methods and Apparatus for Rapidly Prototyping Three-Dimensional Objects from a Plurality of Layers.” Unless you have some time to spare, don’t get him started on banjos and bluegrass!

West’s research interests include characterization and testing of metal and polymer parts fabricated by additive manufacturing, chemical analysis, static and fatigue testing, metallography, and particle size analysis.
