GuhaKatie Basinger is a doctoral student in the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at NC State University. Katie’s research focuses on a new strategy to rapidly and uniformly expand viable skin graft ex vivo for implantation and treatment of acute burn wounds. This new wound healing strategy will be further developed and optimized for clinical applications using an orbicular tissue expansion bioreactor that we have recently developed. There have been several successful tests that include expansion of up to 40% of the original sample over 7 days, as well as an expanded sample that was transplanted back onto the specimen resulting in successful wound healing.
