New CAMAL Partnership Pushes Innovation in Additive Tech

The Center for Additive Manufacturing and Logistics (CAMAL) partnered with Freemelt, a Swedish company known for advanced 3D printing technology. Together, they are launching an application center to promote using Freemelt’s industrial eMELT machine for serial production. This partnership strengthens CAMAL’s role as a leader in innovative manufacturing research.

A Collaboration Built for Progress

Freemelt chose CAMAL for this partnership because of its strong reputation in additive manufacturing (AM). CAMAL has led Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion (E-PBF) research since 2003. This expertise makes CAMAL an ideal partner for helping Freemelt expand in the U.S.

The collaboration will begin with a feasibility study. A North American customer is testing Freemelt’s E-PBF technology for making high-temperature metals. These studies and other projects at the Application Center will be funded by companies exploring Freemelt’s technology. This setup allows CAMAL and Freemelt to drive innovation while meeting the needs of industry leaders.

Supporting U.S. Manufacturing Growth

Freemelt CEO Daniel Gidlund highlighted how important this partnership is for the company. “Partnering with NC State University, through its renowned CAMAL center, is a vital step in our U.S. expansion. The Application Center will meet the growing demand for feasibility studies and proof-of-concept projects, helping companies transition to serial production and advancing our position in critical sectors such as defense, energy, and medical technology,” he said.

Through this partnership, CAMAL will also help Freemelt showcase its advanced 3D printing machines to potential customers. By combining CAMAL’s resources and Freemelt’s innovative equipment, this collaboration will speed up progress in the U.S. manufacturing industry.
